Good interior design should be frictionless. Unless otherwise discussed, you shouldn’t need to buy additional items not in the original concept for you to stow your items away. Your humble abode should also be classy, preferably timeless and effortlessly cosy.

It should serve as a safe haven against the hustle and bustle that is society. So just how do you go about making sure you create a space that is uniquely yours and painless to live in? What are some of the considerations that you need to take into account before agreeing on a design concept?
Glossy Laminates
Nothing screams cheap and tacky more than having gloss laminates in your space. Have you ever seen a high-end space with these finishes before? All of the timeless design styles call for tasteful restraint, using simulated or actual wood textures, soft furnishings and a subtle colour palette to create a cosy home.

And the concerns aren’t just aesthetic – gloss laminates are a magnet for fingerprints. You’d very easily spot smudges on the surface, which can be a pain to keep clean! Scratches will eventually become a problem too!
Excessive Carpentry
Unless it actually adds value to your space, you shouldn’t be looking at liberally constructing carpentry throughout your home. Instead, work with your interior design and maximise the visual impact of your renovation with a good mix of freestanding and custom built-in cabinets.

Where space optimisation is sorely needed, custom cabinetry can be an elegant solution to keep your mess stowed away neatly. Quality, loose furniture items can then be used elsewhere in the space to serve as contrast!
Not Accounting for Sufficient Sockets
It is a problem rife in the local renovation industry. Designers and electricians alike tend to not cater for sufficient electrical outlets, resulting in homeowners having to use unsightly extension cords.

These extension the length of the cables mean dust can easily accumulate, and it can be really difficult to keep clean. Try and make sure your ID is aware of the electrical devices you normally need for each space, and cater for at least a spare 2 x 13A socket where possible!
Choose an Interior Designer That Gels With You!
Keep these in mind to avoid common Interior Design faux pas. For even greater effect, you should also try and find an Interior Designer that you can gel with. Mutual understanding can really make the difference in a renovation!
