City dwellers typically do not have the luxury of expansive gardens. But that shouldn’t stop you from sprucing up your home with greenery.

Product designers and engineers the world over have come up with gadgets, making it easier to sustain plant life in a highly urbanised environment.

Xiaomi Mi Flower Care Plant Sensor

Plants are unable to communicate their needs in a way that we’d understand. And that’s where Xiaomi’s Mi Flower Care Plant Sensor comes in. Think of it as an intermediary – it uses its four sensors to decode your plant’s needs in a format that you’d understand.

It does so by checking the current parameters against its database of 6,000 plants. It’ll tell you if the flora in your space needs extra water or light, and if the soil has enough nutrients. As temperature plays a big part in ensuring plant survival, it’d also relay that message too. Information is decimated over an iOS and Android app. Smart home integration is also possible.

FYTA Beam

This project was first announced on crowd-funding platform kickstarter. It is functionally similar to the Xiaomi Mi Flower Care Plant Sensor, measuring the same parameters of soil moisture, nutrition levels, light intensity and temperature.

The latest iteration of the product is significantly more compact than its predecessor and its Mi rival. It is also priced about 25% less than its closest competitor. Another perk is the product’s ability to increase coverage range via connection with one another in a mesh network. Do note that FYTA does not mention the size and depth of their plant database.

Click & Grow

Unlike the two items mentioned above, Click & Grow isn’t just a monitoring system. Rather, it provides an entire ecosystem to facilitate the easy growing of plants. The product consists of integrated lights and watering systems, with electronics that automatically control your plant’s exposure to both.

The main unit has provisions for 3 pre-seeded pods, which will provide you with an (in theory anyways) endless supply of fresh herbs and vegetables. The idea is to take the guesswork out of gardening, and it achieves so through smart controlled water and nutrient systems. The company currently has over 50 varieties of plants for you to choose from!

You do not Need to be a Horticulturist to Garden

These products have been designed to ensure that you do not have to resort to trial and error in a bid to sustain plant life indoors. City dwellers are already under constant stress, from work and from the general pressures of urban environments.

The whole point of having a home with greenery is to serve as a means of relieving stress – gardening shouldn’t add to your woes!
