For the longest time, there has been an absence of a very popular bodystyle in the BYD lineup locally. The Chinese automaker has sold vans, MPVS, SUVs and even a wagon here. But they have never offered a hatchback for sale locally.
Until now. Vantage Automotive recently launched the all-new BYD DOLPHIN, and here are 5 fun facts about this vehicle!
It Is Similar Dimensionally to the Honda HR-V

Need an established vehicle for a sense of scale? Try the HR-V on for size – literally. The two cars measure up almost identically, with the DOLPHIN being marginally smaller in every metric. The DOLPHIN’s wheelbase is significantly longer though, coming in at 2,700 mm versus the 2,610 mm of the HR-V.
It Is One of the Cheapest New Cars on Sale Today

BYD wants $156,888 for a DOLPHIN. With Category A premiums coming in at $97,000 at the time of writing, the raw car cost sans COE is only $59,888. It certainly isn’t the cheapest new car (that honour goes to several PI petrol-powered JDM imports), but it most definitely is one of the most affordable new car options. One thing is for sure – it is the most cost effective new EV on sale today!
Funky Is the Name of the Game

Ocean-inspired cues are present throughout the vehicle. The interior has a very organic design, mostly free of straight, sharp edges. And they have built on these soft shapes by offering the vehicle in youthful interior colours, making it abundantly clear the target market that BYD is aiming the DOLPHIN at!
Faster Than Fast Charging

As one of the global leaders in EV R&D, BYD has managed to equip the DOLPHIN with the ability to fast charge at a higher-than-average rate of 60 kW DC. This is despite it being the most affordable new electric cars on sale in the market today. For some context, most of its closest competitors will only charge at up to 50 kW DC. This is an advantage that you’d really only exploit later down the line, since most local DC chargers still top out at 50 kW.
Making a Splash
The DOLPHIN is obviously more conventional on a design front as compared to its ATTO 3 sibling. It has all the ingredients of being a hot seller – dinkier dimensions, a lower price tag and youthful appeal should logically make this a popular choice amongst the younger, eco-conscious car buyer!
