It isn’t unheard of for renovation contractors to try and convince you to opt for carpentry wherever possible. Everyone will need furniture of some kind anyways, so why not convince the homeowner to spend the money with their carpenter, instead of buying off-the-shelf items?

If executed properly, bespoke carpentry can really improve your quality of life. However, in a highly pragmatic society that doesn’t preach proper design thinking, it is unlikely that the resultant cookie-cutter cabinets, especially from mainstream “Interior Designers” and renovation contractors, can actually positively benefit your day-to-day life.

You’d probably be better off buying loose furniture. But why? And are there any other reasons that would push you to not building your cabinets in?

Configurability

Having loose furniture will allow you to change up the layout of your house as you deem fit. It offers a flexibility to alter the way you interact with your space with greater convenience, creating a scenario that allows you to properly grow with the space, instead of potentially having to put with the restrictions of built-in carpentry.

Bringing Your Furniture To Your Next Home

Your “investments” are not permanently attached to the apartment you currently call home. If you have purchased quality items from name-brand manufacturers, chances are that these pieces of furniture could be reused in your place of residence, saving you a lot of cash in the process.

Less Financial Strain During Your Renovation

You’d typically need to agree on the amount of carpentry fairly early on in the renovation process. There’s then a need to religiously budget out the rest of your renovation expenditure to make sure you do not overspend. Not a problem with loose furniture items, as you can always space out the purchases.

There’s Still A Need For Built-In Carpentry

There are places in the home that you cannot get away with using just off-the-shelf items. The kitchen is a prime example, as it is typically an awkward size and needs to be highly customised to suit your lifestyle.

I’d also argue that a master bedroom wardrobe is also essential, though I’d urge you to properly sit your chosen Interior Designer/Contractor down and run them through whatever it is you need from your cabinets!
