Renovations are expensive. Which is why it is logical that you’d want to prolong the lifespan of your new home. But how should you go about doing it?

See, you’ve already spent a good 5 digits on your home makeover. We’re sure you’d want to keep your home in as good a condition as you realistically can, for as long as possible. Here are some tips and tricks to ensure you meet that objective – some of the items mentioned here are things interior designers don’t want you to know.

Before Your Renovation

Avoid Design Fads

See something trendy and hip on social media now? Think twice before incorporating it into your new home. Fads are a great way to date your home once the trends are over. Instead, opt for design cues that are timeless. A good start would be to reference minimalist and/or scandinavian design styles.

Selecting Your Materials Wisely

It’s a case of not being penny wise and pound foolish. You may save a decent chunk of change now by opting for lower cost materials, but it is almost guaranteed that these items are less durable in the long run. When they eventually fail prematurely, you’d have to source for replacements – and they will certainly not be cheap!

After Moving In

Regular Maintenance

Once the renovation is completed, ensure that you prolong the lifespan of your interior by keeping things spick and span. As much as possible, carpentry should not be exposed to moisture. It is also crucial that you take care of your countertop too. Natural stone should be resealed once a year. For compact and solid surface tops, avoid placing hot pans directly on the surface.

Avoid Harsh Cleaning Chemicals

They may be good for getting rid of stains, but these chemicals can break down materials as well. If these substances are in regular contact with your various fixtures and cabinetry, expect their lifespan to be shortened. Also, consider using microfibre towels to wipe down any gloss surfaces, as they are susceptible to scratches if regular rags were used instead!

Get Your Money’s Worth In Your Makeover

You’ve worked hard for your dream home. Make sure it stays looking like the home you’ve envisioned. Keep these tips in mind and you should have an interior that looks timeless, and that lasts a long time.
