Ask each automotive journalist what their top 5 cars of the year are, and you’d have a different list every single time.

We all prioritise different aspects of each car, which is why it is important to seek the opinion of your fellow writers for a more well-rounded, and well-informed perspective.

And whilst we serve to help point car buyers in the correct direction, it is crucial that the features and characteristics of the cars themselves are beneficial to their intended buyers. As a collective majority, your combined viewpoints also paint a general picture on which car makers are doing the right things.

As such, we’ve collated a list of the top 5 cars of 2024 so far, based on how well received each car has been with our viewers!

5. Nissan X-Trail

Nissan’s e-POWER drivetrain combines the best of both worlds – instant electric torque, with the convenience of a conventional ICE vehicle. And that package does wonders to its fuel economy, which is a critical factor when shoppers look for a car. Couple that efficiency, with its seven-seat configuration, and it is no surprise that the X-Trail made this list!

4. Lexus LBX

It perhaps isn’t all that surprising that the Lexus LBX has made the list. The compact hatchback is the Japanese brand’s first foray into a true mass-market luxury vehicle. It may be based on the Toyota Yaris Cross (and is thus Lexus’ first Category A COE car!) but there’s very little in common in the user experience between the two cars!

3. MG M9

The revitalised MG brand started selling SUVs here, both of the petrol and fully-electric variety, when they re-entered the Singapore market back in 2020. The MG5 and MG4 cars were eventually added to their line-up, but they weren’t as great a departure to the modern MG norm as the M9 was. This luxury seven-seater was built to fight the Alphard and Vellfire incumbents, at a much more palatable price tag!

2. Skoda Octavia Combi

The MQB-based Volkswagen-group cars are fantastic vehicles to drive, and the platform works for anything from an economical daily-runabout, all the way to a fire-breathing R-badged VW. But we definitely were not expecting a Category B Stationwagon to be the most read-about MQB platform car on our website. At the time of publishing, the car is no longer for sale, so if you want an Octavia, you’ll have to consider the Category A Liftback!

1. BYD Atto 3 CarbonEdge

Were you expecting anything different to top this list? The BYD Atto 3 has been extremely well-received since it was launched a few years ago, and they are literally everywhere. The featured unit is a pre-update car fitted with the CarbonEdge package, which gives owners a black roof and interior fabrics, as well as a frunk!
