Retro is back in vogue once again with the introduction of Volkswagen’s latest electric vehicle offering.

And the German marque has an ID. Buzz for everyone – it comes with two different wheelbase and battery options, as well as three different seating configurations. There may be shades of a cargo van in its design, and there is a commercial vehicle variant also offered for sale, but this isn’t a van adapted for service as an MPV.

The ID. Buzz is actually a passenger car first, and cargo vehicle second, being built atop Volkswagen’s MEB Platform, which is also used in all of the other ID passenger car offerings.

Passenger car versions of the ID. Buzz will come either as a NWB car, or an LWB vehicle. All of the additional length has been added to the wheelbase, making the LWB vehicle a true seven-seater. As mentioned above, there are two battery sizes available for the ID. Buzz – the NWB car has a 79-kWh battery pack and is good for a 430-kilometre range, and the LWB car, with more underfloor space, has an 86-kWh pack. As a result, the range of the latter goes up to 470.

The commercial vehicle ID. Buzz will only be available in NWB trim. Unlike the passenger versions, it will not have powered sliding doors, and will have a two-piece split tailgate. Other differences include a more stripped down, simplified and hard-wearing cabin, and steel wheels.

It does not have the cargo capacity of some of the other electric vans on the market, but it more than makes up for it with perhaps the best electric range of any commercial vehicle out there. And by quite some margin too.
