The Q4 e-tron might just about be the most important new car that Audi will launch in Singapore this year.

This is the Ingolstadt manufacturer’s first attempt at building a product more aimed at the mass market. Though this certainly isn’t the first all-electric car that the German brand has built – that crown goes to the original e-tron SUV and the e-tron GT.

Those cars, however, were unabashedly aimed at those that were better-to-do, with price tags of $400,000 and up. The MEB-based Q4, though, has a more palatable price tag. The range starts with the variant as tested, and that only comes in at $254,999.

Purpose-Built All-New Electric Platform

Clearly building on lessons learned from the Q8 e-tron and the e-tron GT, the Q4 e-tron definitely feels much better packaged. Audi has created additional interior space without adding extra length to the exterior by ensuring the bulkhead is as upright as possible.

This has increased the amount of legroom on offer for both the front and rear occupants, as despite its smaller overall dimensions, it has comparable amounts of knee room to the much larger Audi Q7. There are also other subtle touches that contribute to improvements in the interior space.

A generally-boxy shape means head and shoulder room for rear occupants isn’t compromised. Surprisingly, despite this base car lacking a sunroof and the car having a high belt line, Audi still manages to pack in sizable window openings that allow for plenty of natural light to flood the cabin.

Premium Build Quality

As you’d expect from an Audi, material quality is excellent. A lot of the screens and switchgear are lifted directly from the Audi parts bin, but that is not a bad thing. The Q4 has a new steering wheel, which actually feels surprisingly nice in the hands.

Being a Category B car, the Q4 doesn’t at all feel sluggish. It conducts itself surprisingly well, riding and driving like a car that costs significantly more. It has a homologated range of 466 kilometres, helped by its 82 kWh battery pack.

In this early media preview drive, we only had 24 hours with the car, so that wasn’t sufficient for a thorough range test. But some rough arithmetics reveal that it’d do a range a smidge above 400 kilometres. Which is impressive, considering we spent most of the preview drive in stop-start city traffic.
