Honda announced its intent to build an all-electric version of its popular N-VAN kei van. This is in line with its target of being carbon neutral by 2050.

Electrification hasn’t affected the cargo capacity of the N-VAN, as the battery pack fitted to the vehicle resides underneath the floor. It also preserves most of its petrol-powered sibling’s adorable exterior design, with only minor alterations to accommodate its CHAdeMO port up front.

The Japanese automaker is expecting the N-VAN e to be capable of at least 210 kilometres on a single charge. No word on power output or battery capacity just yet, though Honda did reveal that it’d take 5 hours to charge an N-VAN e using an AC 6kW charger.

You’d also find differences in the braking system over its combustion cousin. The N-VAN e has an electric servo brake (it is the first kei van to have this), a regenerative braking mode and larger brake rotors to beef up its stopping ability.

Honda has also equipped it with V2L technology. By using the “Honda Power Supply Connector” for AC external power supply, the N-VAN e can power electric devices up to a total of 1500W using its battery. This makes it possible to easily obtain electricity during power outages or disasters.

You’ll be able to see the N-VAN e in the metal at the Tokyo Mobility Show later in the month. No official word on pricing just yet, but Honda did mention a target sale price of ¥1 million (SGD$9,200) last year when quizzed on a potential sale price of its electric kei van.
