I did not expect to cover as much mileage, and spend as much time as I did, with the Skoda Octavia 1.0 litre. When the loan dates were confirmed, it appeared to just be another routine car test for my day job. This usually entails driving around a good mix of roads with no fixed schedule, only stopping occasionally to take photos for the review.

But it ended up being the busiest and most chaotic weekend I’ve had so far in 2023. And through the madness, the Octavia was a proper trooper. It served me well as a dependable vehicular partner, offering respite and an odd sense of serenity from the hectic schedule.
And if you’re in the market for a practical, affordable and sensible saloon, there’s reason to believe that it’d serve you just as well as it served me. Here’s why!
Outstanding Fuel Economy
My total average fuel consumption across four days of driving was 12.5 km/l. It doesn’t seem all that impressive, but bear in mind that at least 60% of said driving was done off the expressways and in heavy city traffic. This means plenty of stop-start driving, and naturally higher fuel consumption.

You cannot fully disable stop-start – the engine shuts off on the move whilst the car is coasting. As a result of its aerodynamic efficiency, it actually travels a solid distance off throttle, saving you fuel without any major sacrifice in overall pace.
Comfortable Seating Position
I’d rather manufacturers spend their resources on creating properly ergonomic seats than powered ones. The proof is in the Skoda pudding. Despite spending long hours in the driver’s seat, I had zero discomfort, which is probably the result of proper back support.

The steering wheel position was bang on too, as was the size and ergonomics of the wheel itself. It manages to strike the perfect balance between offering an engaging-feeling drive, whilst being pleasant enough to use whilst stuck in the evening rush hour traffic.
Cavernous Boot
There are cars in its class with lower load lips. But a slightly higher load lip doesn’t negatively impact the overall usability of a car’s boot if the aforementioned boot’s aperture is large enough. The liftback styling means you have full access to the rectangular 600-litre cargo compartment, which will swallow basically anything with relative ease.

It also allows you to load items into your boot without the need to awkwardly contort your body in an attempt to shoehorn bulkier items into the cargo area. Need even more space? There are levers at the rear for you to lower the rear seat backs for even greater practicality!
Refined Overall Experience
Despite its price point, you’d realise that the car feels properly premium. With quality materials used throughout its construction, and unique styling employed throughout the cabin, the interior manages to be a properly pleasant place to be in.

It helps that space isn’t in short supply on the inside, so the passengers I had with me were not scrambling to find room. On the move, sound insulation has also been properly done, so the car is generally silent, with only the occasional roar of the motor audible when you are properly pedalling it.
Proper Progress
The automotive industry has come a long way. People lament the formation of automotive conglomerates, saying that the mass mergers have resulted in car buyers having less true options when shopping for their next car.

But it is only through shared development costs that cars as competent as this can be priced as such. Just two decades ago, when more automakers were still fully independent, a car in this part of the price bracket would have felt properly agricultural. Sparse equipment levels, rudimentary engines and even questionable build quality were almost guaranteed.
Thankfully, technological developments and joint R&D investments have allowed the brands with lower sales volume from within the Volkswagen-Audi Group to properly flourish, creating cars as competent and solid as the Octavia 1.0 litre!
