Many Singaporeans regularly make the hop across the border. It appears that many are willing to wait in the customs queues for hours on end, drawn possibly by the allure of cheaper fuels and the promise of supposedly more scrumptious food.
But which checkpoint should you use on your jaunts across the causeway? And what are some of the pros and cons of each? We have put together a list below so you can decide which checkpoint is right for your travels!
Woodlands Checkpoint
Woodlands Checkpoint is significantly more accessible than Second Link, and on both sides too. Once you’ve completed the crossing, the Malaysian side leads you directly into a network of roads with hotels, malls and restaurants weaved into them.
There is also another factor that makes Woodlands the more appealing crossing point of the duo – cost. The toll to leave Singapore is just $0.60, and re-entry is free. But this convenience and low toll fees come at a cost – expect to have to endure a longer queue.
Tuas Checkpoint
Tuas Checkpoint is located deep in our western heavy industry areas. The Malaysian side of the border is also less developed than if you have crossed from Woodlands. Travellers use this to have quick access to the highway network.
It is also conveniently located for visitors going to places such as Sunway Big Box, RUD Karting and Legoland. Singapore charges a higher fee for using Second Link – $4.20 in total for one’s exit and subsequent re-entry.
Keep These in Mind Before Your Travels
Ensure that you have sufficient balance in both your cashcard and your touch ‘n go card. Malaysia charges around the equivalent of $8 for entry.
Singapore-registered cars must also have 3/4 worth of petrol in their tank, and whilst not strictly enforced at the present moment, you are legally required to have a Malaysian VEP for entry.
