And there are factors that will drive some to actually consider trading their car in for a new vehicle before the start of 2024, as there’d be some changes to legislation. These updates can make it less favourable for car buyers financially.

Reduction in VES A2 Rebates

Shopping for a VES A2-banded car? You’ll need to fork out an additional $10,000 come January 2024. The government announced the changes to the rebate structure earlier this year, with the aim of increasing the widespread adoption of cleaner energy cars.

Currently, A2 cars have a $15,000 rebate. This will fall to just $5,000 from 2024. There are no changes to the A1 band, so these cars will continue to enjoy the $25,000 rebate!

GST Hikes From 1st Jan

It may not seem significant on paper, but a minute percentage hike can translate into thousands of dollars come check-out. In simple maths, a 1% GST increase on a $150,000 car will cost you an additional $1,500.

Which is why if you already have your eyes set on a specific car (and have the means to comfortably pay for it), you should consider pulling the trigger and placing your order.

Stock Availability

And even if you have already made your shortlist, you may not be able to order and then collect the exact car that you want before the start of either the New Year, or the Lunar New Year in February. Several brands have wait lists with build slots all accounted for well into 2024.

If you are concerned about having a fresh ride for the New Year, make sure your dealer can either procure you an earlier build slot, or ensure that they have existing stock.
